Updated: 8/9/2022 | Where to Stay in The Galapagos Islands
The Galapagos Islands are well-known because the biologist Charles Darwin visited and formulated many of his evolutionary theories there.
Today, it’s also known as a great holiday destination because of its beautiful landscape and the opportunity to see unique and preserved wildlife.
Are you wondering where to stay on the Galapagos Islands? We’ll give you all the info you need to know to plan a perfect Galapagos vacation.
About the Galapagos Island
While the Galapagos Islands consist of 13 volcanic islands, you can only stay on 4 of them. They are Santa Cruz Island, San Cristobal Island, Isabela Island, and Floreana Island.
You can visit and find things to do on all the islands, but for the 9 that you can’t stay overnight on, you can still opt to visit them from 6:00 am until 6:00 pm.
Keep in mind that the electricity used in the Galapagos Islands is 110 with two-pronged wall sockets. Make sure you bring the appropriate adapters.
To get between these 4 islands, you can either take a speed boat or flight. If you want to fly, keep in mind you’ll have to make advanced bookings as they quickly fill up.
Santa Cruz Island
If you want to be where everyone is, then we’d suggest Santa Cruz Island. This is where you’ll find the majority of hotels. There are around 40 of them.
You’ll find these hotels in Puerto Ayora, which is the most populated town in the Galapagos Islands; the population is around 12,000. This town is located right on the southern shore, so getting on and off the island will be very easy to do.
San Cristobal Island
San Cristobal Island has the second-most hotels. However, they only have a fraction of what Santa Cruz Island has. Here, you’ll only find around 10 hotels.
You’ll find these 10 hotels in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, which is the capital of the Galapagos Province. It’s located on the southwest coast of this island, which again, makes it very easy to get to and from San Cristobal Island.
Isabela Island
Next up, we have Isabela Island. Despite being the archipelago’s biggest island, it only has around 7 hotels on it.
To find these 7 hotels, you’ll have to go to Puerto Villamil. Only 2,200 live on Isabela Island and you’ll find the majority of them here in this port village.
Puerto Villamil is on the southeast coast of this island, so again, it makes for very easy transportation.
Floreana Island
Last, but not least, we have Floreana Island. On this island, you’ll have very few choices, as you’ll only find 2 hotels here.
These 2 hotels are found in Puerto Velasco Ibarra. This seaside town is where most of the 120 residents of Floreana Island live. So if you’re looking for something remote and away from the crowds, this is definitely an island to consider staying on.
